| Suboxone, Subutex & Vivitrol...
Medications Used for Opioid Withdrawal and Management
It wasn’t too long ago that heroin and pain pill addicts were forced to endure horrendous withdrawal symptoms during the initial physical withdrawal process. In fact, many opioid (previously referred to as “opiates”) addicts would avoid going to drug rehab specifically due to that initial 7 to 10 day (sometimes longer) period of what could be described as a living hell – Although keep in mind that the severity of symptoms is directly tied to how big of a habit they have, or in other words how much they must use each day in order to avoid any onset of withdrawal symptoms.
Suboxone and Subutex were introduced during the early 2000’s for use in the opioid withdrawal process. Though both, Suboxone and Subutex are opioids as well, when used correctly and under the care and guidance of a licensed medical practitioner, their ability to taper down the opioid addict from active addiction to zero usage, while dramatically lessening the physical withdrawal symptoms, is tremendous. Most physicians however, prefer to go the route of Suboxone (as opposed to Subutex) due to its inclusion of Naloxone in the formula which is an opioid antagonist or “blocker.” Essentially, Suboxone provides the detox benefit while also preventing the patient from continued opioid abuse at the same time.
Aside from the medical detox component, Suboxone can also be used as a long term solution called “Suboxone Maintenance.” Additionally, some opioid addicts that choose to go the route of long-term medication maintenance may opt for the use of Vivitrol. Vivitrol was approved by the FDA to treat opioid dependent patients in 2010. Interestingly, just 4 years earlier (2006) Vivitrol was also approved by the FDA as a treatment for alcohol dependence.
Both Suboxone and Vivitrol contain an opioid blocking component that blocks those receptors in the brain. However one key difference between the two is that while Suboxone involves a daily regimen, Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection. Both drugs have shown much success in reducing the likelihood for relapse among opioid addicts; however, these types of long-term approaches are generally reserved for those with a track record of multiple relapses. This isn’t to say that a 20 year old heroin or painkiller addict with a couple of prior relapses isn’t a potential candidate for Suboxone or Vivitrol maintenance, but it’s more common among addicts with a longer and more blemished past.
For those in and around the Ann Arbor, Michigan area that struggle with opioid addiction and relapse, Structured Living, LLC now provides very low-cost or even no-cost Suboxane and Vivitrol maintenance. Men and women living at either of our “Suboxone-friendly” sober living homes can take advantage of this new opioid recovery solution while only having to pay for the monthly housing fee of $565, a very affordable rate as compared to other less reputable addiction recovery houses throughout Michigan and nationwide as a whole.
Our owner, through his desire to give back to the community as an act of gratitude for his own sobriety, has worked tirelessly over the past year to secure funding for this opioid detox & recovery program through alumni scholarship funds, private sources and government funding.
It is extremely rare to find a reputable sober living residence, or similar type addiction recovery home, that allows its clients to be actively taking such opioid/heroin detox medications like Suboxone or Subutex. More surprising yet, is that as of late 2018 the Structured Living organization has been able to tap into various scholarships, charitable funds and government programs resulting in our recent launch of a low-cost or no-cost medically assisted heroin-opioid detox program for male & female clients living in our sober living homes.
